Legal English
The course is aimed at introducing students with an intermediate/ advanced level of English, who work or are interested in working in an international environment.
It consists in an introduction to Legal English for students to be able to use such knowledge during their studies and their working lives. The purposes of the course are to: -enable the students to carry out a wide range of communicative tasks within an academic and international context similar to the one they may be working in in the future; improve the students listening, reading, writing and speaking comprehension through the use of different kind of materials; introduce specific vocabulary and concepts necessary for their future studies and professional careers; review and build an essential English grammar focused on the specific areas of the grammar and syntax of the language used in the legal world; increase the students’ awareness of current issues and events from a legal perspective; develop students’ strategies to take control of their own learning process also through the use of class materials and online law resources. The course is designed to foster acollaborative approach to language learning and to favor a comparative perspective on the
legal concepts and areas.

1 Class
Introduction to Legal English, Common and Civil Law system.
In this class we will explore the basis of Legal English, its origins and the main differences between the systems of Common and Civil law. We will review the main principles of the two systems and also refer to the role of Legal English as a “ lingua franca”.

2 Class
Types of laws, Latin/French expressions.
This class will be focused on two topics.
The first will be about specific terminology and concepts related to laws, including differences amongst different types and vocabulary to express what a law says with practical exercises.
The second will be about the most common Latin/French expressions in Legal English with practical exercises.

3 Class
A day in civil and in criminal court. The legal profession.
The class will focus on two topics.
The first will be reviewing the structure of a civil and a criminal trial including vocabulary, types of documents, court structure, courts’ procedures and most common expressions.
The second will be focused on vocabulary and concepts related to the exercise of the legal profession.

4 Class
Grammar applied to Legal English and Legalese.
This class will explore in depth the use of prepositions, verbs, nouns, adjectives, common expressions and collocations, formation of phrases and Legalese (typical formal Legal
language).

5 and 6 Class
English for Company law
These classes will be focused on the main vocabulary and concepts related to the birth, life and death of a company with a comparative approach h between the common and civil legal systems. We will use specific materials and practice throughout the class with exercises and documents’ drafting.

7 and 8 Class
English for Contracts
These classes will explore in depth the main principles of Contract law, clause analysis, clause drafting and interpretation, breach of contract and relevant remedies. There will be practice exercises and clause drafting.

9 and 10 Class
English for Criminal law and Torts
These classes will deal with the basic principles of Criminal law and the connected vocabulary. We will examine the main types of crimes and their discipline.
The second class will explore the discipline of Torts (civil wrongs) with a comparative approach to the discipline of “ civil liability” in civil law systems, with the relevant
vocabulary and expressions.
